Specializing in Men’s Issues, Professionals’ Issues, Addiction, and Trauma

Hi, I’m David.

People don’t typically seek out therapy when they’re on a winning streak. Many discover their motivation for change through loss, despair, or life transition. Maybe you feel exhausted after carrying a heavy weight for a long time, or maybe you are adjusting to something new.

Moving forward often means leaving behind things we have grown attached to. You may find that the expectations, the defenses, and the parts of your identity that you once relied on are no longer compatible with the person you want to become.

I want to help you identify and let go of the things that hold you back even when you are ready to grow. I want to help you not only learn new skills, but also to apply the strengths you already possess in powerful new ways. And I want to be present with you, to provide an empathic and nonjudgmental reflection of what makes you “you,” and to witness the unfolding of the next chapter of your story.

  • The phrase “being a man” can hold a lot of power. Our personal constructs of masculinity carry many implicit and explicit expectations, roles, and value judgements. These ideas (and how we think we measure up to them) can have a profound impact our relationships, our body image, our work, our sexuality, and other areas of our life.

  • These are talented, educated, and highly-driven people who are accountable for the safety and livelihoods of others on a daily basis. The term often includes healthcare workers, legal experts, first responders, and executives. You may benefit from specialized professionals treatment if you experience compassion fatigue, burnout, perfectionism, or lifestyle imbalance.

  • Addiction impairs our judgement, stifles the our values, and isolates us from true nurturance. Although early recovery may bring some hope and relief, it also brings many new challenges. We may face shame, stigma, and mistrust as we begin rebuild our lives. Additionally, we are positioned to confront all the things addiction only served to mask.

Addiction treatment is very close to my heart, and it will always be a part of my practice.

  • Psychological trauma is a response to an event that we were not properly equipped to cope with. Our minds and bodies try to adapt, but this process contains many opportunities to get stuck or bring up highly distressing symptoms. Trauma is often interlinked with men’s, professionals, and addiction treatment.

Guided By Evidence, Not Hype

A good therapist is able to serve clients by integrating new and relevant information from the fields of neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and philosophy. While the continual development of knowledge in these areas does lead to better treatment, it can also leave room for shiny and expensive new methods that have not been proven safe or effective. I draw upon my experience in academic research to ensure your treatment is both intentional and validated.

Highly Individualized Care

Treatment planning is like tailoring a suit: No matter how fine the raw materials are, it has to fit! While research is often informed by statistics, I understand that you have your own unique experiences, beliefs, temperament, and environmental context. I offer much greater responsiveness than you will find in any workbook or video series, primarily through an approach of curiosity, attunement, and creativity.

Stories, Not Diagnoses

Formal diagnosis is a tool professionals use to conceptualize cases and communicate with one another. Clients may even find their diagnosis can help them feel they are not alone in their struggle. However, like any tool, diagnoses can also be used and abused in ways that are imprecise and even harmful. As I do not contract with insurance companies, I am able to maintain the highest standards of discretion and privacy regarding diagnoses and clinical records.

Interdisciplinary Alliance

While talk therapy alone can certainly be helpful, it can be even more effective when combined with other services like medication management, nutrition planning, additive family/couples counseling, community peer support, personal training, or sober companionship. I have many connections with highly experienced and trusted resources in these areas, and I would be delighted to make warm introductions and engage in treatment coordination if desired.
